The covering letter is what the employer will see as soon as he or she takes a look at your resume. Because of this, you need to make sure that you have a decent cover letter template.
It’s not too difficult to find a cover letter template online, and all of them are fairly good. The only problem with this is that you will probably be downloading a template that has been used over and over again by others. If you make this mistake, then the employer will probably take one look at your resume and dismiss you as either an inexperienced individual or a copycat.

Making your own cover letter template is a better idea, and there are a few steps that you can take. First of all you should choose the borders. Make sure that you don’t choose anything too thick, and more importantly don’t make it look like a high school diploma.
One you have chosen the border, you can then move on to your font. You should choose something that stands out but does not look like something a child would do. In other words, don’t use huge fonts in your covering letter, and don’t use a font like System or Comic Sans MS. Times New Roman is always a good choice, or even Arial.
Make sure that your covering letter is to the point. It should list your experience, and it should have a header that explains what it is that you do. Basically, this header should be rather short, meaning it should say something like “Short Order Cook” or “Customer Service Representative”. Essentially you need a covering letter that promotes YOU and sells YOU to the employer. Remember that a good cover letter template could get you the good job, and the job you’ve always dreamed of.
